National Championship Musky Open
Tournament Results 2009

Tournament Held August 21-23, 2009

The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center along with the Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin are proud to bring you the results of the 24th Annual National Championship Musky Open. Each year The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and the Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin host the largest amateur musky tournament in the United States on seven lake families in the Eagle River, WI area.  This tournament is a total catch and release tournament open to all ages and designed for great family fun.

The National Championship Musky Open also hosted the fifth annual “Help Fight Hunger” program.  This program was created to help support the Vilas Food Pantry.  Each angler was asked to bring a non-perishable food item.  In return each angler received 1 chance at winning a Shimano rod and reel donated by Shimano, plus another donated rod and two reels.  Thanks to this program the participants in the 2009 National Championship Musky Open donated over 2500 pounds of non-perishable food items to the Vilas Food Pantry - the most ever in the five years this program has been running.

The 24th Annual National Championship Musky Open had 1023 musky anglers representing 15 states enter the tournament - what a great show of participation in this family northwoods tradition. One hundred and forty one muskies were caught and released in this year's Musky Open. The tournament musky angler winner won the tournament with 4 fish with a total of 148 inches. Sixty-three youths entered this year's tournament and what a great time these kids had. There were 62 Guardian/Youth teams of an adult and child entered in this tournament along wityh 61 husband and wife teams.

The largest fish caught in the tournament was 49 inches by Frank Buchacek of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He caught this fish on Kentuck Lake. His catch and release happend Sunday morning, on a Ducktail lure. As the largest fish of the tournament, a replica of the fish will be created by Fittante Taxidermy of Antigo, WI. This replica will be presented to Frank at next year's tournament.

The winner of the 24th annual National Championship Musky Open went to Matt McCumber of Janesville, Wisconsin with a catch of 4 muskies of 35.5, 37", 37", and 38.5 inches for a total of 148 inches.
